It’s that time of year again – a new school year is about to begin. Parents in OKC are looking for ways to create the perfect study corner for their kids. Whether you have a dedicated flex space in your home or you need to carve out a corner of the family room, you can create an efficient study area that will help your child do their best in the coming school year.
Consider your child’s personality
Most kids work better in a quiet space away from distractions. Others prefer to have music playing and people around. Try to work with your child’s natural personality to choose a space that works for them.
Also, think about how much help they’ll need with homework. If they’re young and need a lot of input or supervision, put their study space close to where you’ll be during homework time.
Give them space
For the greatest comfort and organization, give your child plenty of room to do their work. They’ll also need a handy place to store supplies. The desk surface should be large enough for a laptop or computer if they use one, as well as accommodating an open textbook, notebook or workbook and pencils or pens.
Pay attention to posture
Slouching over a desk for hours every day can lead to poor posture and back or neck aches. Make sure the computer screen is at eye level and about an arm’s length away. Adjust the chair and keyboard position so the child can sit up straight. If they’re reading or doing work on paper, have them get up and stretch periodically.
Provide comfortable seating
Since your child will likely be sitting in their study space for an hour or more almost every night, make sure it’s comfortable for them. Consider giving them a couple of options including a chair, an exercise ball or a stool so they can switch out seats if they become uncomfortable.
Limit distractions
While some kids can ignore a TV or a gaming sibling, most need a workspace without those distractions. Keep this in mind when you’re deciding where to put the homework station. Either choose a place that is already usually quiet or maintain a rule of no TV and gaming until everyone’s homework is done.
Organize supplies
Now is a great time to stock up on school supplies, since most stores have them on sale during back-to-school season. When you get them home, create an organized storage system so your child can easily find what they need.
Check the lighting
Put a lamp or sconce near the desk for task lighting. Also be aware of glare on the computer screen. You may have to adjust the position of the monitor or experiment with lighting to avoid glare. Talk to your child’s eye doctor about blue light filtering glasses to wear when using the computer for long periods.
Let them personalize their space
Kids will be more motivated to use a space they’ve decorated for themselves. Invite them put artwork on the wall or place a favorite toy or stuffed animal on the desk. Make their workspace as appealing as possible to give them a sense of ownership.
