Need to pet-proof your new home in a community of new homes in OKC? Pet-proofing helps to keep your pet safe and your home in good shape. Ideally you’ll start the process before you move in. If not, there’s still plenty you can do to make your new home as welcoming for your pets as it is for you!
Train your dog
Basic obedience training helps your dog stay safer and makes him a better companion for your family. Beyond that, teaching him to stay off furniture and not scratch at the doors will help keep your new home looking its best.
Bring familiar objects
Moving to a new house is a big disruption in a pet’s life. Bringing his familiar bed, toys, dishes and food to the new house can help him feel more comfortable. After he settles in, you can replace them with new items if you wish. Or purchase the new items a couple of weeks before the move and let him get used to them in a familiar space.
Maintain routines
If possible, stick to your pet’s usual routines for feeding, exercise and attention. Every bit of familiarity will help make the adjustment easier for them.
Take your dog on a house tour
Try to visit the new home with your dog before you move in. Give him a treat in the kitchen or play with him in the back yard to start building positive associations. Walk him around the new home and yard. When you move in, show your pets where their beds, dishes and litterboxes are.
Prepare the back yard
Decide where your dog’s bathroom spot will be and take him there first thing when he goes outside. If you plan to let your dog off leash in the yard, make sure there’s not a gap under the fence where he can dig or crawl out, and that the fence is too high for him to jump over. Also make sure the gates are secure. Check the yard for toxic plants and be sure no weed killers or other lawn chemicals are used on the grass.
